A Celebration

After a patient has a transplant, all the nurses have a little "birthday party" for him, in celebration of the arrival of the new stem cells, and for the patient's bright new start in life. They all come into his room and sing, and present him with a hat signed by the staff, and put balloons on the door.

Jimmy's fever is around 102 degrees today, and because nothing has shown up in the cultures, they finally let him have some Tylenol. Tylenol is avoided in transplant situations, as it can mask infection, but Jimmy can be very persistent, and eventually he wore them down.

He's getting platelets today, but his hematocrit is still high enough that he doesn't need more blood yet. We have switched from Ativan to Compazine for nausea; it appears to be more effective, and he's not as zonked. Feeling rotten is endemic to this stage of the process, so we'll get through it, knowing that Jimmy will be better soon. The transplant team is in support mode as we wait for the stem cells to engraft, which may start in another week.

Ellen
You definitely have an alternative career as a writer! You ability to describe what you and Jimmy are going through is astounding. It means a lot to everyone who wants to be there with you but can't. Can't wait for the big "E" to happen and get you both out of there safe and sound! Hope Thursday and the weekend zoom by in record time.
Love Julie and Frank too.

Ellen and Jimmy,

Loved seeing the celebation ballons!!! I have been reading daily your post, and you are amazing at your writings...I have learned so much...thanks for sharing. I noticed you mentioned that Jimmy was taking compazine...I once took the drug many years ago, and had a terrible reaction...had to be admittted to hospital. Just sharing for your information....as you said you can do ANYTHING just knowing you both are fighting for happpier days together again. I am praying that God will bless you both with this dream. It's so wonderful to finally experience love from the one you love. I know that to be true for Mark and me. Take care and I will stay in touch.

Ellen, the prayer for today is
1. Get that fever down
2. Stem cells, ENGRAFT! I mean it.
new word but I know it means success.
The road is rough these days.It is hard to imagine the pain, the itching, the discomfort, nausea, and never having a change of scenery.Stay strong. Know that we are pulling for you. BOTH
